Frontiers in Energy 2011, Volume 5, Issue 3,   Pages 313-321 doi: 10.1007/s11708-011-0154-x

Abstract: An optically accessed, single cylinder engine operated in homogenous charge compression ignition (HCCI) mode with negative valve overlap (NVO) strategy was used to perform combustion processes diagnostics under premixed conditions corresponding to the low load regime of the HCCI operational envelope. The aforementioned processes analysis was conducted utilizing synchronized simultaneous combustion event crank-angle resolved images, acquired through piston crown window with in-cylinder pressure recording. This investigation was carried out for one-step ignition fuel—standard gasoline, fuel proceeding single-stage ignition process under conditions studied. The initial combustion stage is characterized by a maximum local reaction spreading velocity in the range of 40–55 m/s. The later combustion stage reveals values as high as 140 m/s in case of stoichiometric combustion. The mixture as well as combustion stages effects are pronounced in these observed analytical results.

Precipitation study of CO

Stevens, Guoping Hu, Wenshou Sun, Kathryn A. Mumford

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2020, Volume 14, Issue 3,   Pages 415-424 doi: 10.1007/s11705-019-1882-4

Abstract: Focused beam reflectance measurement (FBRM) and C nuclear magnetic resonance ( C NMR) analysis were used to study the precipitation process of CO -loaded potassium glycinate (KGLY) solutions at different CO loadings, during the addition of ethanol as an antisolvent at a rate of 10 mL·min . The volume ratio of ethanol added to the KGLY solution (3.0 mol·L , 340 mL) ranged from 0 to 3.0. Three solid-liquid-liquid phases were formed during the precipitation process. The FBRM results showed that the number of particles formed increased with CO loading and ethanol addition for CO -unsaturated KGLY solutions, whilst for CO -saturated KGLY solution it first increased then decreased to a stable value with ethanol addition. C NMR spectroscopic analysis showed that the crystals precipitated from the CO -unsaturated KGLY solutions consisted of glycine only, and the quantity crystallised increased with CO loading and ethanol addition. However, a complex mixture containing glycine, carbamate and potassium bicarbonate was precipitated from CO -saturated KGLY solution with the maximum precipitation percentages of 94.3%, 31.4% and 89.6%, respectively, at the ethanol volume fractions of 1.6, 2.5 and 2.3.

Machine Learning in Chemical Engineering: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats Perspective

Stevens, Kevin M. Van Geem

Engineering 2021, Volume 7, Issue 9,   Pages 1201-1211 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2021.03.019

Abstract:

Chemical engineers rely on models for design, research, and daily decision-making, often with potentially large financial and safety implications. Previous efforts a few decades ago to combine artificial intelligence and chemical engineering for modeling were unable to fulfill the expectations. In the last five years, the increasing availability of data and computational resources has led to a resurgence in machine learning-based research. Many recent efforts have facilitated the roll-out of machine learning techniques in the research field by developing large databases, benchmarks, and representations for chemical applications and new machine learning frameworks. Machine learning has significant advantages over traditional modeling techniques, including flexibility, accuracy, and execution speed. These strengths also come with weaknesses, such as the lack of interpretability of these black-box models. The greatest opportunities involve using machine learning in time-limited applications such as real-time optimization and planning that require high accuracy and that can build on models with a self-learning ability to recognize patterns, learn from data, and become more intelligent over time. The greatest threat in artificial intelligence research today is inappropriate use because most chemical engineers have had limited training in computer science and data analysis. Nevertheless, machine learning will definitely become a trustworthy element in the modeling toolbox of chemical engineers.
